In Vitro Effectiveness of Samento and Banderol Herbal Extracts on the Different Morphological Forms of Borrelia Burgdorferi
by Akshita Datar, Navroop Kaur, Seema Patel, David F. Luecke, and Eva Sapi, PhD
Lyme Disease Research Group
University of New Haven

Abstract
A tick-borne, multisystemic disease, Lyme borreliosis caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi has grown into a major public health problem during the last 10 years. The primary treatment for chronic Lyme disease is administration of various antibiotics. However, relapse often occurs when antibiotic treatment is discontinued. One possible explanation for this is that B. burgdorferi become resistant to antibiotic treatment, by converting from their vegetative spirochete form into different round bodies and/or into biofilmlike colonies. There is an urgent need to find novel therapeutic agents that can eliminate all these different morphologies of B. burgdorferi. In this study, two herbal extracts, Samento and Banderol, as well as doxycycline (one of the primary antibiotics for Lyme disease treatment) were tested for their in vitro effectiveness on several of the different morphological forms of B. burgdorferi (spirochetes, round bodies, and biofilmlike colonies) using fluorescent, darkfield microscopic, and BacLight viability staining methods. Our results demonstrated that both herbal agents, but not doxycycline, had very significant effects on all forms of B. burgdorferi, especially when used in combination, suggesting that herbal agents could provide an effective therapeutic approach for Lyme disease patients.

Dr. Lee Cowden

Dr. William Lee Cowden MD is a USA board-certified cardiologist, clinical nutritionist and internist, skilled in kinesiology and homeopathy who received his MD from the University of Texas Medical School. Dr. Cowden has over twenty years of experience in treating cardiac disease, cancer and other chronic diseases, primarily with alternative/integrative medicine. Dr. Cowden is accomplished in applied kinesiology, electrodermal screening, homeopathy, reflexology, acupuncture, acupressure, biofeedback, as well as color, sound, neural, magnetic, electromagnetic, and detoxification therapies.

In March 2012, Dr. William Lee Cowden MD received the prestigious ACIM  Humanitarian Award for his continually meeting people at their point of need and giving them hope. At one stretch of his illustrious career, virtually every new client had been given a death sentence by the established medical community. Through his quiet assurance and belief in the potential for the body to heal, the vast majority of these clients survived.

Dr. Cowden can be emailed at info@acimconnect.com , as Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Academy of Comprehensive Integrative Medicine (ACIM-www.acimconnect.com ).

Dr. Cowden’s Protocol – You can view the entire protocol here.
The Cowden Support Program (CSP) is a protocol developed by Wm. Lee Cowden, MD initially for the treatment of late-stage Borrelia and Lyme Co-Infections. Since the protocol helps to resolve the majority of the root causes of most patient’s symptoms, it can also be used to treat  “post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome” and many other chronic health conditions of unclear cause.  More information can be found at Bionatus News and Research by NutraMedix.

Item Descriptions

ADRENAL – replenishes the adrenal glands restoring normal function.  It is a fairly widespread belief that Lymies have weak adrenals. The herbs used in Cowden’s adrenal tincture are all pretty common and have a variety of uses.

AMANTILLA – relieves stress and anxiety and aids sleep.  This is just valerian root extract, which is quite popular for calming anxiety and as a sleep aid.

BANDEROL – I have found very little information on this, and Nutramedix hasn’t supplied a full species name. My guess is that they are using  Otoba novogranatensis. It’s shown some usefulness against parasites.

BURBUR – aids detoxification of the liver, kidneys, lymphatic system, and the ground matrix. Cowden includes Burbur leaf extract in his protocol as a gentle detoxifier that is useful during herxes. He uses the leaves  Desmodium molliculum

CUMANDA – is an anti-inflammatory, broad-spectrum antiviral, antiparasltic, antibacterial, and antifungal, effective against Borrelia burgdorferi and the coinfections.    It’s traditionally used as an antimalarial, among other things. Read more about it here http://www.rain-tree.com/campsiandra.htm. This site notes that its use for Lyme disease may all be hype. On the other hand, Lyme is often treated by drugs used for malaria like doxycycline or plequenil, so maybe using Cumanda isn’t totally ridiculous.

ENULA – is marketed as an antimicrobial.  It consists of three ingredients; only the Elecampane seems useful.

  • Elecampane- This is very common and easy to find. It is a traditional cough medicine and is a good expectorant. It does have anti-microbial properties. Read more about it here http://www.mountainroseherbs.com/learn/elecampane.php
  • Vitis tiliafolia- It seems that this is known in Jamaica as Blood Wiss.
  • Ipomoea jalapa -This mainly has been used traditionally to loosen stools.

MAGNESlUM MALATE – helps maintain normal cardiovascular, muscle, nerve, bone, and cellular function. Magnesium can be gotten very cheaply, though supposedly some forms are less effective than others.

MORA – Mora seems to have been designed primarily as an antifungal agent. It has three ingredients.

  • Blackberry leaf is used for mild diarrhea and sore throats (see http://www.mountainroseherbs.com/learn/blackberry_leaf.php).
  • Yarrow flower- There’s a good description of Yarrow here http://www.mountainroseherbs.com/learn/yarrow.php  It has been used in anti-nflammatory and antifungal remedies.
  • Calycophyllum spruceanum has been used traditionally as a general antimicrobial. Read more about it here http://www.rain-tree.com/mulaterio.htm

PARSLEY– aids detoxification of the liver, kidneys, lymphatic system, and the ground matrix.  Parsley is believed to be good for detoxifying because it has lots of chlorophyll (see here http://www.mountainroseherbs.com/learn/parsley.php)

PINELLA – Brain/Nerve Cleanse eliminates neurotoxins.  It’s great for reducing inflammation and for detoxifying the brain and nervous system, which helps with brain fog.  Pimpenella anisum is more commonly known as Anise. The anise seed is a common spice that has been used for millennia.  The plant has been used traditionally in some parts of the world as a mild stimulant. Perhaps this is why users feel more clearheaded when using Pinella.

QUINA – is an anti-inflammatory, broad-spectrum antibacterial and antiprotozoal, effective against Borrelia burgdorferi and the co-infections.  The main active ingredient in Quina is Quinine, which was an early antimalarial. The FDA put out a warning in 2006 about Quinine (see http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=78097) Apparently, misuse of quinine can cause some nasty side effects, including death, so please only use this product under your doctor’s supervision.

SAMENTO– is an immune system modulator, anti-inflammatory, broad-spectrum antibacterial, effective against Borrelia burgdorferi and the co-infections. This is more commonly known as Cat’s Claw, and research has shown that it’s effective for Lyme disease. Cheaper varieties are easy to find.

SERRAPEPTASE– good at breaking down dead tissue, and it’s included in the Cowden protocol because of a theory that it can break down the cyst form of Lyme.

SPARGA–  good for detoxing sulfur.

ZEOLITE – This is used for heavy metal chelation. Chelation, however, should really only be done under the supervision of a qualified health practitioner.

ZEOLITE HP: a negatively-charged, volcanic clay that binds heavy metals and other positively-charged toxins in the gut and carries them into the toilet; this clay has been imprinted with energies* designed to cause the tissues to release all heavy metals and various radioactive substances.
